Homemade Baby Food

I just finished my first batch of homemade baby food. Sweet potatoes! It was not hard at all and I just did the math and can't believe how much I saved... and this is the twins first vegetable!

I bought 5 sweet potatoes for $2.27 (that's for NYC... probably cheaper somewhere else!)
That made 44 cubes of baby food.
That comes out to 5 cents per vegetable per meal.

To buy baby food on Fresh Direct it would cost me 79 cents per jar.
At the age the twins are at now they would only be eating about half a jar, so for 22 jars of baby food it would cost $17.38

I just saved 15 dollars!

What I made today will last us about 3 weeks if this is the only vegetable they ate! I plan on introducing them to a new food in 3 or 4 days!

Next up...Pears!

I made most of Georgia's babyfood. It is a great savings and it tastes so much better! Please let me know if you have any questions. I found pears to be a little gritty and watery (you might need to thicken it with a little cereal) and you will probably want to put the peas through a metal strainer. The skins don't puree as well and might gag the twins (if they are sensitive to that tpye of thing). Have fun!

I'm soooo proud of you!!!! I made applesauce today! It really does save a lot of money! I say whatever is on sale stock up and it will last you a long time!
I agree with Elizabeth about the pears but just add the cereal and it is fine. Good luck!

Susan, When I gave you and Amber the processors I thought, they are not going to mess with making baby food. You have both surprised me and I am so proud of each of you. Love and Hugs Gran

Hey, I would love to see some footage of the "ei ei go" version of the song. You will probably get a kick out of this, but I had a nightmare the other night. I had a dream that I was pregnant, with twins, and they were both boys. It couldn't have been more scary if Freddy Cougar himself were in it! I am gonna look into the baby food thing. I give you props for that. I dunno if I have the patience, but I do need to save the money.

Hi, I ran into your site doing some research and I wanted to let you know that I have published a website that might interest you...NurtureBaby (www.nurture-baby.com). It's all about teaching parents the art of making delicious and nutritious homemade baby food. Would love to hear your thoughts.

thanks and good luck...it's a great thing you are doing!

Susan,
Have I ever told you that you are Superwoman?!? :)

Here are a few suggestions:
www.wholesomebabyfood.com
www.freshbaby.com
www.thesoftlanding.com (for baby cubes)

And for the ultimate of ease in baby food making and clean up, check out the Beaba Babycook. Look for it at diapers.com (because it is cheaper than Williams-Sonoma). It is a little pricey, but in the long run would save you a lot of time. Wow did that sound like a commercial or what?! Have fun with this new adventure! Love you guys...praying as always! :)

Making baby food is SO easy - especially at this stage when they're only eating one fruit/vegetable at a time. I second Catrina on the wholesomebabyfood site - I found a lot of helpful info there when I was making Ella's food.

We had a lot of fun making Ezra's baby food. It makes it all the more fun to know you're saving money! We used those links Catrina sent--especially Wholesome Baby Foods.
